Race Numero Uno

This past Sunday Diana and I had our first race of the season (for a full race schedule see previous post) and it was HOT. At 5 a.m. when the alarm went off it was already 84 degrees outside and the temp continued to climb as the start of the race drew near. When I dropped Diana off at 9:45 a.m. it as already 93...I now completely understand why the race was call The Hottest Half. Even though it was hot it was a great race and Diana and I added another shiny medal to our collection. Only 4 more races to go until the Big Race - White Rock Marathon.

Oh, the places Jim will go!

I signed-up with Team In Training to specifically run and train for the White Rock Marathon. However, I have a few other races on my calendar between now and December. I was thinking that I shouldn’t be running just one race in honor of Jim, but I should run all my races in honor of Jim.

So Jim, lace up those running shoes we have some miles to cover. To be exact we will be covering 91 miles on race days alone. This doesn’t include all of the training miles.

Race Days
  • August 15 – Hottest Half (I am opting for the 10K because running a half marathon in August in Texas is for crazy people.)
  • September 6 – Stonebridge 10K (Team In Training Event)
  • September 26 – Heel, Hills and Him (Half Marathon)
  • October 31 – Marine Corp Marathon in Washington DC
  • November 7 – DRC Half Marathon (I pounded out 26.2 miles the Sunday before, what’s 13.1??? Don’t tell my coaches…)
  • December 5 – White Rock Full Marathon (Team In Training Event) I want to wish Ken, my hubby, an early Happy Birthday. He will celebrate his 34th birthday on race day. Ken – thanks for all of your love and support during all my training and races.

Meet Jim

I would like to introduce Jim Pinkerman. Jim is Deana’s (one of my besties) step-dad and my Honored Hero.

Through Team In Training (TNT), we are able to select an Honored Hero who inspires us through their determination and strength. I had the pleasure to meet Jim and spend a long weekend with him and his family this past spring at Deana’s wedding in the Florida Keys.

Jim’s Story
Eight-years ago Jim received blood test results indicating he had high protein levels. Through a series of tests Jim found out he was at high risk for myeloma cancer. During the next 8 years, Jim’s protein levels stayed the same (higher than a normal person but lower than having myeloma.) Then over the last year his protein levels started to increase. A few weeks after Deana’s wedding Jim received the news from his doctor that his protein levels had increased to the point he was no longer at high risk of myeloma cancer. He had full-blown myeloma. While this news definitely rocked his world, Jim didn’t let it knock him out. Jim is currently undergoing treatment and is doing great. After his first cycle of treatment his IGG levels have dropped from 4905 to 2372. Way to GO Jim!!

Jim’s charisma and love of life is contagious. I am privileged to have Jim as my Honored Hero. On December 5, I will be running 26.2 miles in honor of Jim.
